Championing dignity and wellbeing for Rwanda's elderly
Abeza Community Group was founded with a simple but powerful vision: every elderly person in Rwanda deserves to age with dignity, health, and economic security. We recognize that the generation that rebuilt Rwanda after the 1994 genocide now faces unprecedented challenges as they enter their golden years.
With over 862,000 elderly citizens in Rwanda—58.7% of whom are women—facing multimorbidity, economic vulnerability, and social isolation, the need for comprehensive elderly care has never been more urgent. Yet existing systems remain fragmented and underfunded.
Abeza Community Group bridges this gap through the Golden Years Project, a holistic, evidence-based program that addresses health, economic empowerment, social inclusion, and systemic advocacy. We work in partnership with government agencies, health facilities, and local communities to create sustainable, community-led solutions that honor the contributions of Rwanda's elderly generation.
We believe elderly care is a human right, not charity. Every person deserves to age with respect, autonomy, and access to comprehensive support.
Sustainable change comes from within communities. We empower local volunteers and beneficiaries to lead program design and implementation.
Our programs are grounded in rigorous research, validated measurement tools, and continuous learning to ensure maximum impact.
With 58.7% of elderly being women, we prioritize gender-responsive programming and ensure at least 60% female beneficiaries.
